1) Where can I take the 32 hour prerequisite training course?
Ø See list of Training Providers. Basic training can be obtained from one of the approved Training Providers. This list is not inclusive and training may be obtained from facilities/individuals not listed. Please note, it is the examinees responsibility to ensure the training received will follow the Need-To-Know Criteria set forth by the Association of Boards of Certification, in order to successfully pass the Georgia Statewide Backflow Prevention Assembly Testers Exam. 2) If I take the written exam and pass but choose to take the hands-on portion at a later date, how long do I have to complete the hands-on portion ?
Ø You must register for an exam within the 90 days after you have completed the written exam. If you do not register and take the hands-on portion of the exam within the 90 days you will have to retake the entire test at your own expense.
3) Do I need to bring my own test equipment to the exam?
Ø It is preferred that you bring your own equipment to ensure that you are comfortable and knowledgeable while testing; however, it is not required.
4) Where can I take the six (6) hour recertification course?
Ø See list of Training Providers GAWP does not require that your continuing education be from one of the Training Providers listed. Any six (6) hours of Backflow-specific training will be accepted, but you must obtain Proof of Attendance that includes: course name, course date, course length and trainer. Note Confined Space Entry is not considered to be Backflow-specific.
5) How do I renew my certification?
Ø To renew your Certification you must submit the Backflow Certification Renewal Form along with the Renewal Fee and a copy of your proof of six (6) contact hours of Continuing Education related to Backflow. (Each Certified Backflow Tester is required to obtain six (6) hours of Backflow-specific continuing education during the three years your certification is active in order to renew.)
6) How do I renew if my expiration date has passed?
Ø If you fail to renew your certification before your expiration date, you will have 90 days to submit your Backflow Certification Renewal Form along with the Late Renewal Fee and a copy of your proof of six (6) contact hours of Continuing Education related to Backflow. After the 90-day grace period you will be required to retake the exam.
7) Is an out-of-state certification accepted in Georgia?
Ø ASSE, ABPA, and TREEO certifications are able to be used in the State of Georgia; however all other out-of-state certifications are not accepted in Georgia. If you wish to be certified in Georgia and currently hold an out-of-state certification, you will be required to complete the Georgia Backflow Prevention Testers Certification Exam in order to be certified within the state of Georgia. 8) What National Certifications are accepted in Georgia?
Ø The ASSE, ABPA, and TREEO Certifications are all accepted certifications in the State of Georgia; the GBPAT Certification is the Georgia State tester certification issued by GAWP per GAEPD.
9) How can I have my name added to the Certified Testers List?
Ø If you are certified through GAWP, your name will automatically be added to the list. If you hold another certification please contact us at (770) 618-8690 or at firstname.lastname@example.org for an application. The cost is $50.

Ø The Georgia backflow prevention assembly tester certification exam is compiled from the Manual of Cross-Connection Control (9th Edition) foundation for Cross-Connection Control and Hydraulic Research, University of Southern California; Recommended Practice for Backflow Prevention and Cross-Connection Control, AWWA Manual M14, American Water Works Association; Cross-Connection Control Manual, EPA 816-R-03-002, available through the Water Resource Center (WRC); and the Cross Connection Control Manual, Accepted Procedure and Practice Handbook, Pacific Northwest Section-AWWA. 11) What Does the Exam Consist of?
Ø The Written Exam has a 3 hour time limit and consists of 100 multiple choice questions; you are required to have a 70% score to pass the exam.
Ø The hands on performance evaluation, requires the USC 9th or 10th editions’ test procedure to be demonstrated properly on the Reduced Pressure Principle Assembly, Double Check Valve Assembly, and the Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assembly.
12) Why do I have to obtain a Tester Certification?
Ø The Georgia Environmental Protection Division has been tasked by the State of Georgia to establish rules and regulations to maintain the quality of the State’s Water Resources, per O.C.G.A. § 12-5-174. To accomplish the task of Cross Connection Control and Backflow Prevention, the EPD has written rules to create minimum standards for water systems. The specific rules pertaining to this subject are the rules for safe drinking water (RULES FOR SAFE DRINKING WATER Chapter 391-3-5). The rule specific to Cross Connections is 391-3-5-.13; paragraph (7) Certified Backflow Testing is the rule requiring certification for testing.
Ø (7) Certified Backflow Testing. After October 1, 2004, all required field testing shall be performed by persons who are certified in the testing of backflow prevention assemblies by the Georgia Statewide Backflow Prevention Assembly Certification Program, as approved by the Division, the American Backflow Prevention Association (ABPA), the American Society of Sanitary Engineers (ASSE) or the University Of Florida TREEO Center.
13) Where does the GBPAT Certification Exam come from?
Ø GAWP uses a prescribed industry standardized exam; it is written by The Association of Boards of Certification (ABC).

14) When is the Exam Given?
Ø GAWP will host an exam following the completion of an Approved Training Provider’s coursework.
Ø GAWP also creates an exam schedule prior to the beginning of every year to hold exams outside of these that follow coursework; normally an available exam will be given the week following an exam that was held for an Approved Training Provider. The exam schedule is designed to allow you a readily available opportunity to take the exam.

15) Where is the exam given?
Ø GBPAT Exams are given regularly throughout the State; some of the locations are Carrollton, Cobb County, Columbus, Clayton County, Gwinnett County, and Savannah. We will also hold exams at other various locations when necessary. Please view the Exam Schedule for one that is right for you.
